The work ‘A extensão na inclusão de catadores de recicláveis em Almirante Tamandaré, Paraná‘ (Extension for informal recyclers’ inclusion in Almirante Tamandaré, Parana) received honorable mentions at the SEI-SITE 2020, the annual UTFPR Seminar of Extension and Innovation.

The article describes actions of the university extension project ‘Atentar-se à Exclusão para Contribuir com a Inclusão’ (Addressing exclusion to ensure inclusion), carried out within the scope of the Federal Technological University of Paraná – UTFPR, in conjunction with two associations of informal recyclable material workers in the municipality of Almirante Tamandaré, at the metropolitan area of Curitiba, capital of Paraná state.

First actions in 2014 triggered the current project, coordinated by Professor Stella Maris da Cruz Bezerra, whose main objective is to exchange experiences and knowledge in proposing and implementing solutions to dignify the work of informal recyclers.

Results over the period include occupational safety training offered to the association workers, a video documentary about the ‘Ilha’ Association, architectural projects production targeting demanding renovation of ‘Ilha’ Association’s workplace, and monitoring of actions to optimize solid waste management in Almirante Tamandaré. Recently, in 2020, a significant achievement, representative of the articulation among various partnerships involved, was the signature of Terms of Collaboration between associations and the city hall.
